Bill Watterson must have had something like this in mind when he came up with that strip. Liberals are hilarious.

Public tax dollars hard at work!
Unlike my ancient predecessor, this Tullius hasn't had his hands chopped off. With hands attached I offer my thoughts on philosophy, religion, politics, and whatever else I find worth mentioning. I'm conservative religiously and politically (with libertarian leanings). I value reason and freedom but also traditions and "Oldthink." I relish being on the wrong side of history when history is wrong--part of a philosopher's job is to be unpopular. (Views given here may not represent my employers')
"Liberals are hilarious." I think at the root of this, it's not the value system (liberal vs. conservative) that is important, but its interpretation and implementation. This is a moron's misguided attempt at being sensitive. That this particular example leans left is not necessarily an indication that liberals have cornered the market on idiots. Unfortunately, there are morons associated with all parts of the political spectrum (have you seen the stuff Nathan's dad sends to us?). The exception is for moderates--we can do no wrong. ;) **cough**
ReplyDeleteBack to the topic at hand. I would understand if a specific child at that school had indicated that they were transgender, it might be easier to group children on other attributes IN THAT SITUATION/CLASSROOM, if the assignment would work equally well using a different variable, but to pretend like gender is not a valid construct or one that is widely used in our culture to identify people is asinine. I find it very interesting that a transgender person commented on the article and said that they (transgender individuals) did not want this or think this would be helpful in any way whatsoever. I agree that this is just stupidity.
Thanks for the comment.

TB: I agree. When I have in mind "liberals" here, I don't have in mind "classical liberals" but extreme progressives. That is why in the title I said "Leftwing Feminist Ideology" since there are more or less left and right versions of feminism (e.g., Camille Paglia being a more right-feminist, the "Thinking Housewife" being more to the right; gender feminism vs. equity feminism; etc.)
"but to pretend like gender is not a valid construct or one that is widely used in our culture to identify people is asinine."
TB: I'm not sure that I'd disagree, but I do disagree with the left's typical narrative that gender (or sex) is reducible to a social construct.

TB: Nonetheless, that there is an ideology which supports the "stupidity" as evidenced by the very documents the school was proposing to teachers. The Calvin and Hobbes strip makes that point: gender is a social construct not grounded in biology, natural laws, etc. but in however one thinks of oneself; moreover, it's sexist to call someone a boy based on biological attributes since the boy could think of himself as not a boy. Better not to use the term "boy" so as not to offend a boy who does not think of himself as a boy.
