On Why ESPN's Michelle Beadle is an Idiot

ESPN recently suspended Steven A. Smith, thanks in part to the following comments (below) by his apparently brainless colleague.  What did Smith do to deserve a suspension?  After going way out of his way to say that men should never hit women, he said (a) that women too should try not to provoke would-be-hitters, and (b) that nobody ever talks about this. That bit of OBVIOUSLY TRUE advice is what got him suspended (and now we see WHY no one ever says that in the liberal media!)  Here now is his colleague's idiotic remarks which provoked his suspension:

So I was just forced to watch this morning's First Take. A) I'll never feel clean again B) I'm now aware that I can provoke my own beating.

I'm thinking about wearing a miniskirt this weekend...I'd hate to think what I'd be asking for by doing so .

I was in an abusive relationship once. I'm aware that men & women can both be the abuser. To spread a message that we not 'provoke' is wrong

Violence isn't the victim's issue. It's the abuser's. To insinuate otherwise is irresponsible and disgusting. Walk. Away.

Underlying Beadle's tweets is the leftist facade that it's never right to assign any responsibility to a victim.  But only someone who is morally obtuse would think such a thing.  The woman who gets drunk, goes to her first date's house, strips down into her underwear is acting both immorally as well as imprudently.  Why is it immoral?  Because it is immoral to tempt another or suborn other immoral activity.  The man who leaves alcohol at his alcoholic brother-in-laws house is acting immorally.

Beadle's tweets also express her failure to be able to distinguish degrees of moral wrongness and culpability.  The woman who goes to the first date's house and strips down does something far less immoral and is far less responsible for the date rape.  But she does something more immoral and she is more responsible than the woman who does not get drunk, does not go to the house of someone she barely knows, but is nonetheless raped while minding her own business (who does nothing immoral at all).

To say that "To spread a message that we not provoke is wrong," is just plain foolishness. You are a fool if you think that you can do whatever you want and no one will ever retaliate.  Fallen humans just aren't like that.  Basically telling women that they can do whatever they want (with their bodies!) and can treat men however they want is bad for women (and men).

  1. Tullius, if you were a woman, maybe I would listen to you.....but all I see in your post is misogynistic hatred. You're so gynophobic.

  2. TB (who is also a TB not identical with Cicero),

Gynophobia would perhaps explain how that post came about, but it sure wouldn't explain my five children!

  4. True. I just think that accusations hold more power when you can label them with some sort of "phobic" reference.
